LilyPad is a wearable e-textile technology developed by Leah Buechley and cooperatively designed by Leah and SparkFun. Each LilyPad was creatively designed to have large connecting pads to allow them to be sewn into clothing. Various input, output, power, and sensor boards are available. They're even washable!
[the main board consists of an ATmega168V with the Arduino bootloader and a minimum number of external components to keep it as small (and as simple) as possible. Board will run from 2V to 5V].

the sparkfun is a great place to find a lot of interesting hardware components. ive been using it a lot lately, and there is a lot of just good info about hardware too .. anyway...
As for your last post, processing is a great environment to work in especially for beginner scriptors, and yea arduino and processing interface great with each other but they are separate things. i love their interface, it so cool.
as for the gears thinking, there was a project at school where a couple guys put polarized film on gears and then controlled there rotation by sensing light, i thought there was a video on youtube, you might look around there was a lot of our projects posted by our instructor james tichenor,
i tried putting a link on this blog before it wouldnt work i'll try again if it doesnt work just cut and paste it :P.
